CAPTAINS CORNER

Happy New Year to all, 2026 is off to a roaring start at the club. Our courts have been really busy with members and visitors over the holiday period. We saw record numbers attend for our Australia Day themed Saturday social play. Congratulations to Mike Howe winning best dressed. (See pics below)

Saturday Social from 1pm, Sunday social runs now from 5pm to 7pm and Thursday social from 6.30 to 8.30pm, Monday and Wednesday Ladies from 8am, open to all organised tennis members and visitors. $10 fee for non-members and casual members. No need to put your name in, just turn up.

Midweek Ladies have also seen record numbers during January.

Mid-week social ladies Australia Day fun

In good humour and inspired by Kirsty's recent (on court) fashion faux pa, the inaugural Australia Day Inside Out Fun Day has become part of the mid-week social ladies' calendar of events.

Not only did some wear their underwear 'inside out' but non matching shoes and size & washing instruction tags were all on display.

It was a morning of challenging tennis in between showers and gusty winds, but the camaraderie and fun kept spirits high. Pictured below in the Australia Day fun collage are Kirsty (the inspiration), Nicola and Grace (fashion winners) with Penny (mid-week co-ordinator).  It will be on again on Wednesday this week for people who may have missed today.

Senior and Junior Club championships will be held in March (dates above), more information will come out in the next Snippets but it is never too early to start looking for Doubles/Mixed partners. Of course, I am happy to help you find a partner.

Captain’s Table Luncheon @ Clairault Streicker Winery 22nd February, please see details below.  Only a few tickets left so please contact me ASAP if you would like to join.

Lastly, good luck to all our Dunsborough ladies playing in the Gala Day at Busselton Tennis club this coming Thursday, and don't forget AFL Footy Tipping which Mandy is running again (this year it's on the App rather than a manual process).

RECENT & UPCOMING EVENTS

Australia Day fun at Ladies mid-week and Sat social

Sawatsky Cup

Dunsborough were, for the third consecutive year, represented at the Sawatsky cup in Perth  this month. This high level doubles tournament is played annually at Alexander Park in honour of Roscoe Sawatsky. It raises funds for Rare Voices Australia, the support organisation for the 2 million australians with rare diseases.

One of the recognised lead-up events to the Australian open, the event attracts many of the state's leading players, with tennis and goodwill always the winners.

Dunsborough's team of Pat Mulhern, Al Kerr, Shane Morley and Franco Vosca aquitted themselves admirably, winning hearts and minds as well as the odd match!

Our best wishes go out to Pat's father who  is known to many at the club  and came over from UK to watch the event but the following day broke his hip falling from his bike on Rottnest!

COACHING

FROM THE ARCHIVES

The below images remind us all how important VOLUNTEERS have been, (and continue to be!) at our Tennis Club

First President of Tennis Committee was ROSS SCOTT from 1979.

Diane D’Espeissis conducted junior coaching and later, Wendy White, Gaby Molloy, and Shelley Mead. Juniors were encouraged to participate in Seniors Mixed Days on Sundays [Saturdays from 1990].

The first 2 courts, initially constructed in 1981, required resurfacing by 1986, at a cost of $2000 - again with volunteers assisting.  Unfortunately, these showed marks very quickly and Grant applications were soon being made for resurfacing again-  but not achieved until 1993.

ONLINE

BOOK-A-COURT SYSTEM

Don't forget courts are free for members or available for visitors at a fee. You need to book a court online. Make sure you tell your friends, both non-member locals and those visiting Dunsborough.
